Despite budget cuts, 410-year-old UG will still have ‘grand party’

The UG will celebrate its 410th anniversary from May 21 to 25 with an anniversary party themed ‘Making Connections’. The programme has been scaled down, but there will be a celebration.

In November last year, the board of directors stated that the anniversary celebration should be more understated than previously intended. The reason for this was the cutbacks the university had to implement, partly due to high energy costs.

As a result, this year’s anniversary will be shorter than usual, running from Tuesday to Saturday, and a number of major events have been scrapped. Despite the austerity, the UG calls the lustrum celebration ‘grand’ and claims to have a ‘wonderfully varied programme’.

Programme

The programme items range from a sports day to a festival on science, from a baking competition to a networking lunch and from a dance party to an open house in the UB and the Academy building. With a diverse programme, the RUG hopes to attract students, staff, Groningen citizens, and alumni.

The anniversary theme is Making Connections, based on the Strategic Plan in which the uni focuses on strengthening various ties: internally between different disciplines and faculties and externally with knowledge partners and social parties and companies from both the region and beyond.

Meet

According to the UG, the lustrum is an excellent opportunity to ‘meet, connect and celebrate together’. The full anniversary programme can be found on the UG website, where people can also buy tickets.
