Carillon player Auke de Boer has been playing the RUG’s bells for twenty-five years. Now, he’s retiring. For one hour, he’ll play requests from UKrant readers. What would you like the tower to play?
Anyone who’s ever been in the city centre on Tuesday morning between ten and eleven will have heard him. That’s when carillon player Auke de Boer plays the bells in the tower of the Academy building. His songs are heard far and near.
After twenty-five years, he’s leaving the UG. That’s why, on December 14 between ten and eleven in the morning, he’ll be playing requests from the UG community. It can be anything, from rock to classical music, from pop to jazz – as long as it has a melody.
Is there a song you’d like to hear from our trusty carillon player? Something you’d always wanted to hear coming out of the tower? Send us your requests before Wednesday, November 17, to [email protected]
Bohemian Rhapsody
Five years ago, to celebrate his twentieth anniversary as UG carillon player, Auke de Boer played requests from UKrant readers for an hour. Students and staff sent in all their favourite numbers, ranging from Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen and Stairway to Heaven by Led Zeppelin to the intro songs to shows like Game of Thrones and Pokémon.
