Uni should embrace new technology such as ChatGPT (but who’s actually writing this?)

When it was launched in November, ChatGPT caused a worldwide stir. Some people had their doubts, however. What if students turn en masse to the intelligent chat bot to have it write their work for them? This open letter urges us to embrace the new technology.

Dear University of Groningen,

As a student at the University of Groningen, I am writing to advocate for the incorporation of ChatGPT, or other large transformer models, into the assignments and projects of all courses. This new technology is here to stay and will inevitably become a staple in many industries. It is important that we, as students, are exposed to and trained in its use.

For those unfamiliar with ChatGPT, it is a language processing model that uses machine learning techniques to generate coherent and relevant texts. It is capable of completing tasks such as translation, summarising, and content creation.

Unfortunately, there has been a push from some lecturers to exclude ChatGPT from student assignments, citing concerns about the authenticity of the work produced.  However, these efforts are likely to be futile as technology continues to advance.

Some lecturers are concerned about the authenticity of the work

It is becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish between the work of ChatGPT and the work of a human being. Rather than stressing themselves out about how to exclude ChatGPT from assignments, teachers should embrace and integrate these technologies into their coursework.

One argument in favor of using ChatGPT in our assignments is that it can save time and effort. Just as we no longer need to perform certain manual calculations or rely on physical encyclopaedias, the use of ChatGPT allows us to complete tasks more efficiently. It can also improve the accuracy and quality of our work, as ChatGPT is able to generate coherent and relevant text based on a given prompt.

Another argument is that the use of ChatGPT is a natural progression of the constantly evolving field of technology. In the past, we have learned to use online communication platforms such as email, messaging apps, and video calls to keep in touch, rather than relying on handwritten letters or phone calls.

The incorporation of ChatGPT into our assignments is simply the next step

The incorporation of ChatGPT into our assignments is simply the next step in this progression. It is a way to make our work more efficient and effective, and to keep pace with the advancements of our field.

I believe that the use of ChatGPT in our assignments is beneficial for both students and educators. It can save time, improve the quality of our work, and keep us up to date with the latest technologies.

I urge the University of Groningen to believe that the use of ChatGPT in our assignments is beneficial for both students and educators.  It can save time, improve the quality of our work, and keep us up to date with the latest technologies. I urge the University of Groningen to consider the incorporation of ChatGPT, or similar technologies, into all course assignments.

Thank you for considering my request.

Best wishes,

ChatGPT
