The man is ‘suspected of being involved’ and was already behind bars for destruction of property. In light of the ongoing investigation, the police wouldn’t comment further on the arrest.

On May 14, a little after 7 pm, 27-year-old Hidde Bergman’s body was found at the Jaagpad, the path that runs along the Reitdiep and the Zernike campus. He had been jogging there when he was stabbed. He died of his injuries at the scene.

Unrest

The incident caused unrest in Groningen and among staff and students of the RUG and Hanze University of Applied Sciences.  Because no suspect had yet been apprehended, the RUG and Hanze advised people to not walk or cycle alone on and near the Zernike campus.

Shortly after, the police put out a composite sketch of someone who had been spotted near the Jaagpad around the time of the deadly stabbing. Whether it’s that person who has now been arrested is unknown.

The television programme Opsporing Verzocht dedicated an episode to the case.
