Dining with Natalie: Curry Me

As a native of culinary melting pot Malaysia and the daughter of a restaurateur, UG student Natalie Voo knows her food. Every other week, she reviews Groningen’s student-friendly dining scene. This time: Curry Me.

There’s something undeniably heartwarming about watching someone you’ve cheered on for years finally make it big – Curry Me is serving up that success story alongside their delicious curries.

They’ve been delivering homemade Indian food since 2020, when then-UG student Fahd Rayees realised that Groningen’s restaurant scene was a bit of a pricey quality gamble. With the help of his mum, this led to the birth of Curry Me – affordable, tasty food you don’t need to sell a kidney or remortgage for. I’ve been a fan since 2021, so seeing them grow has been like watching a friend win at life.

Indulgent and spicy

Naturally, I had to check out their first physical location, keeping in mind they’re still in the ‘testing phase’. My order included the butter chicken, honey chicken, and honey tofu, with a side of raita, dal, and masala veggies.

The butter chicken was even creamier than back in their delivery days, and just as indulgent. The honey chicken was a perfectly balanced spicy and sweet dream, with the tofu being the real MVP with its soft, almost buttery texture. The raita is an absolute lifesaver, cooling down the salt factor in the curries. The dal is like any other average dal. The masala veggies packed a punch, even if a little heavy-handed with the salt.

Top 2

The interior is still a work in progress, though the self-service setup was super chill, and the staff beyond friendly. Fahd himself was around running the show and was totally open to feedback (always a good sign).

With the prices so affordable and the food so yummy, I’m going to go ahead and say it: Curry Me is already in my top 2 for Indian food in Groningen. Bold statement, I know, but I stand by it, and will be keeping an eye on them – something tells me there’s even more deliciousness on the horizon!

Curry Me, Rademarkt 10

An affordable, recently opened Indian restaurant that serves delicious authentic curries. For two people we spent 40 euros.
