The University of Groningen is exploring whether ius promovendi can be extended to assistant professors. Until now, only professors and associate professors have had the right to act as formal supervisors in a doctoral promotion.
The establishment of the committee is part of a longer discussion about promotion rights. Only a few years ago, only professors could act as promoters. This was expanded to include associate professors in 2018, who have demonstrated themselves to be competent supervisors and researchers.
However, the advocacy organisation for young academics, The Young Academy, feels that the primary supervisor of a doctoral candidate should also be their promoter. Various faculty members also called for an expansion of promotion rights at the opening of the last academic year in Groningen.
