Art as a means to initiate conversation about depression and suicide

According to research, half of all students experience feelings of anxiety, depression, or loneliness. With the artwork ‘Silent Struggle’, artist Saskia Stolz aims to raise awareness of young people with mental health issues. It was unveiled on Monday, accompanied by a poem recited by the UG’s poet-in-residence Ruth Ruijgers.

The municipality of Groningen hopes the artwork will engender a conversation about depression and suicide among young people. In the municipality as well as the rest of the country, suicide is the leading cause of death among people under 30.

The artwork will remain on display at the A-kerkhof until January 29.
