‘Meetings with multiple managers do not show that restaurant guests misbehaved themselves massively’, Vindicat writes in a statement. ‘According to the restaurant, there is no damage and the members of Vindicat will be welcome next time.’
One manager of the Sushi Mall, who does not want to be mentioned by name, confirms that the restaurant was not ‘wrecked’ by members of the student association. ‘Some things happened, but nothing serious. I don’t know who mentioned this, but it’s being blown out of proportion’, he reacts by telephone.
According to Sikkom, members supposedly misbehaved massively at the sushi restaurant at the Sontplein. Based on the statements of a guest, the blog reports that Vindicat members were throwing glasses, were rude to personnel, urinated against the wall and stole bottles of wine.
‘All sorts of things happened’
Sikkom reporter Willem Groeneveld stands by his report. ‘I spoke with employees, people living in the vicinity, the police was on the scene, all sorts of things happened. But Sushi Mall makes money from Vindicat and they’re downplaying the whole matter. Vindicat has the accreditation to take into account. The only thing they can do now is to squash the news by denying it.’
Vindicat admits that people in the vicinity called the police due to noise nuisance. Police officers supposedly left after meeting with the students. ‘We will speak with the house elders of the Vindicat houses who were present to find out more about what happened that night. If these meetings or other information still shows that members of Vindicat have misbehaved outside of our association, we will take appropriate measures’, Vindicat says in their statement.
The RUG is currently meeting about this matter, spokesperson Jorien Bakker says. The university granted a conditional accreditation to the association. ‘We need to consider what happened, and have to see what is and isn’t true. We are doing this together with the municipality and Hanze University of Applied Sciences. No report has been made to the police. We will probably release a statement in the next hour’, Bakker says.
Poop on the walls
According to Sikkom, members of Vindicat also misbehaved around the clubhouse of rugby club G.S.R.C. The students supposedly made a mess of the dressing rooms and smeared poop on the walls and hallways.
According to the association, this is a miscommunication. ‘Female members of Vindicat had a two-day sleep-over and were not informed that the dressing rooms needed to be available to another party on Thursday morning. As a result of mess that was not cleaned up yet, the sports park took over the cleaning. The Vindicat members who were present immediately said they would naturally pay for the costs of this cleaning after speaking with them on Thursday morning.’
D66 MP Paul van Meenen said on Twitter that he will ask Parliamentary questions regarding the supposed misconduct of the Vindicat members. ‘The sushi bar in Yantai has been warned. How much longer will we tolerate this?’, he tweeted.
