Four percent of students regularly use ADHD medication to enhance concentration. Students primarily do this during the exam period. This is revealed by a large-scale study conducted by the Trimbos Institute, RIVM, and GGD GHOR on substance use among students. Over 28,000 students filled out a questionnaire with questions about alcohol use, smoking, drug use, and the improper use of sleep medication.
Students don’t buy these pills online but receive them from fellow students who have been prescribed the medication for their ADHD. The researchers found this after analyzing sewage samples from student cities Amsterdam, Utrecht, and Eindhoven. The levels of Ritalinic acid matched what was expected based on the prescriptions issued by doctors.
In 2021, RUG researcher Anselm Fuermaier also conducted research on the use of Ritalin among first-year psychology students in Groningen. His study of over 1,000 first-year students revealed a much higher figure of sixteen percent who reported having used Ritalin in the past year.
