Exchange students recalled from Israel

Exchange students from the UG have been recalled from Israel. With the country back at war following the attacks by Hamas, it is no longer safe for them to stay there.

The university does not want to specify the exact number of students affected. ‘There weren’t very many’, says spokesperson Elies Wempe. ‘All the students have returned by now.’

The university is staying in contact with them and says that there will be no new student exchanges to the country for the time being. ‘Currently, a code orange is in effect for a large part of Israel. We do not know how the situation in the region will develop, so exchanges will not take place until further notice’, says Wempe.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against travelling to the country and especially not to the border areas near Gaza, Syria, Lebanon, and Egypt, where a code red is in effect. ‘Regardless of your situation: do not go there.’
