Burning truck causes big pillar of smoke above Zernike

On Thursday, a truck burned on Zernike Campus. The truck was leaking oil and caught fire.

According to UG spokesperson Elies Kouwenhoven the fire brigade was on the scene quickly. ‘There was more smoke than fire’, she says. ‘The fire brigade was able to quickly extinguish the fire and thereafter cover it with absorbing granules.’

What exactly caused the leakage in the truck is still under investigation, the spokesperson says. ‘A lot of people were alarmed, because of the great amount of smoke. It looked intense, but luckily the fire itself was not so intense.’

The incident will be reported to the UG’s Health, Safety and Environment Department.

The truck (behind the van) is towed away.
