The two were roughhousing when the thatched fence they were leaning against gave way, a reliable source says. The two students are allegedly members of the student association Vindicat. The second-year student and the fourth-year student fell from the second floor, a distance of approximately ten metres.

Both victims were transported to the hospital. The 20-year-old student broke several bones in the fall and also suffered ruptured organs. He is in the hospital in serious, but no longer life-threatening, condition, according to the source.

Party

The police say that the two students were attending a party at the Visscherstraat. ‘We do not consider the incident to be connected to the KEI week. We are investigating how it happened’, says a press release. The police refuse to release further information about the incident.

The Vindicat board could not be reached for comment.

This is not the first time that students have fallen out of windows or roof terraces. Two years ago, a 20-year-old student was injured when he fell from his second-floor bedroom window in a house in Amsterdam. In 2010, a 20-year-old student died when he fell out of an open attic window in the Tingtangstraatje.

Update: According to Vindicat chairman Marijn Achtereekte, the 20-year-old student is doing well, all things considered: ‘He is stable. We’re visiting him this afternoon to bring him some of his things’, he says. ‘Something like this is a big shock. It’s beyond our control. But we’re glad he’s doing better.’
