How can you keep donated organs healthy after they’ve been removed from a donor? That’s what Silke Bodewes, MD/PhD student at the UMCG’s surgery department, is trying to discover. She wants to know how to keep a liver going, and even how to make it healthier, by way of machine perfusion. This involves keeping the organ alive outside the body by flushing it with fluids. UKrant visited during one of the weeklong research perfusion cycles.
