Some thirty to sixty students are filing a lawsuit against the Dienst Uitvoering Onderwijs (DUO), which disburses student loans and collects study debts. They claim the service did not sufficiently inform them about the risks of study loans.
The reason for the case is that the interest rate on study debts will be increased fivefold in January. The students, represented by student union LSVb and a legal consulting firm, want the court to first determine whether DUO acted unlawfully. The next step is for the court to draw up the total damages, although the students hope politics will intervene after the first step.
