Dutch universities, including the UG, will have to reduce their dentistry programmes from six to five years, ministers Kuipers (Public Health) and Dijkgraaf (Education) have decided, despite a negative recommendation from a committee charged by the ministry to investigate the consequences.
The committee pointed to ‘risks to the quality, safety and cost-effectiveness of care’, as did dentists’ association KNMT. However, the ministry sees no other budgetary option to solve the shortage of dentists.
UMCG department head of dentistry Henri Lohr calls the decision unbelievable. ‘There are grave concerns about the accessibility of oral care, yet the government thinks the solution lies in curtailing and thus worsening dental education.’
