UG ups objective to have more female professors
In order to attain this goal, the UG is creating two more Aletta Jacobs chairs. They will create a total of seventeen extra positions for women, rector Cisca Wijmenga said Thursday during the university council meeting.
The rector also announced that the university will not meet its objective of 27 percent for this year, something she had said in the spring as well. Back then, she said there was a good chance the university wouldn’t have passed 23 percent by the end of 2020. This prediction has come true.
Chairs
Wijmenga announced the creation of the new chairs back in the spring, as well. Initially, fifteen chair were planned, distributed across all eleven faculties. In order to increase its number of female professors faster, the university is now creating two more chairs, upping the total to seventeen.
In 2017, the RUG’s percentage of female professors was 19.6. In 2018, this increased to 21.7 percent, a 2.1 percentage point rise. Even traditional male-dominated universities like the technical universities in Eindhoven and Twente did a better job than Groningen in those years.
