UG worries about public transport

How will students get to Zernike?

UG worries about public transport

University president Jouke de Vries is worried about the state of public transport now that students are allowed to go to campus again. Bus line 15, which goes from the central train station to Zernike, is still cancelled.

‘We’re talking to the OV Bureau Groningen Drenthe about it’, De Vries said in response to a question by De Vrije Student’s David Jan Meijer during the committee meeting preceding the weekly university council meeting.

‘It’s one of our major concerns at the moment’, the board president said. ‘It’s fine for the people in The Hague to decide to reopen universities, but it’s a problem if public transport isn’t working properly.’

Reduced timetable

After all, it won’t just be UG students coming to campus; students from the Hanze University of Applied Sciences and vocational schools will also be travelling by public transport. But the number of buses and trains have been drastically reduced, mainly operating on a reduced timetable.

Bus line 15, which runs from the train station to Zernike, making it the busiest line in Groningen, has been cancelled altogether. ‘There just isn’t sufficient capacity right now.’
