UMCG issues warning: don’t swallow beer bottle caps
The UMCG is warning people not to play a drinking game that involves throwing a beer bottle cap into someone’s glass, after which they have to down the drink in one go. Occasionally, people end up swallowing the bottle cap.
‘This is extremely dangerous!!!’ the endoscopy department’s Instagram post reads. According to the UMCG, they’ve treated several people over the past few weeks who accidentally swallowed a bottle cap.
‘The cap can get stuck in your oesophagus or your stomach. Since the caps are large and have sharp edges, this can damage tissue in your oesophagus or stomach.’
Gastroscope
When someone swallows a bottle cap, the hospital has to use a gastroscope to retrieve it. ‘We insert this scope and try to get a hold of the cap using a net or a loop. Once we’ve got it, we pull it back out through the mouth’, the UMCG writes. ‘We make sure to protect the tissue by having a little hood over the cap as we extract it.’
