UKrant.nl is the independent digital news platform for the University of Groningen. UKrant brings you the daily news and background articles on things that matter to the university, staff, and students, in both Dutch and English. We write our articles in two languages because nearly one in four students is international.
UKrant consists of a team of eight permanent editors and approximately fifteen freelancers and student-editors, both Dutch and international.
We’re looking for an international editor to join the permanent editorial staff for 0.6 FTE.
What will you be doing?
As an international editor, you will write news and background articles that are of interest to the international community, ranging from housing issues and homesickness to language barriers and cycling phobias.
You will also supervise freelancers and student editors in pitching and writing articles. You’ll create a network within the international community (both students and staff); when something happens, you’re always the first to know.
We’re not necessarily looking for someone international, but it would help. We’re mainly looking for a journalist with knowledge of and affinity for the academic community. You have a good nose for hard news and great stories, and you know all about the internationalisation of higher education, both its advantages and its disadvantages.
It goes without saying that both your spoken and your written English is impeccable.
What can we offer you?
Depending on your training and experience, we offer a maximum gross salary of € 4,093 euros a month for a full-time position (pay scale 9 Dutch universities). This position is defined as ‘editor 4’ according to the UFO function profile. The appointment is for 0.6 FTE, for the duration of one year. Working days will be Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

UKrant zoekt een international editor (0,6 fte)
UKrant.nl is het onafhankelijke digitale nieuwsplatform voor de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. UKrant brengt dagelijks – in het Nederlands en het Engels – actueel nieuws en achtergronden over de RUG, het hoger onderwijs en het studentenleven. We zijn tweetalig omdat bijna een op de vier studenten uit het buitenland komt.
UKrant bestaat uit een vaste redactie van acht mensen en zo’n vijftien freelancers en (Nederlandse en internationale) student-redacteuren.
Voor de vaste redactie zijn we op zoek naar een international editor (0,6 fte).
Wat ga je doen?
De international editor schrijft nieuws- en achtergrondverhalen die belangrijk zijn voor de internationale gemeenschap; van huisvestingsproblemen en heimwee tot taalbarrières en fietsangst.
Daarnaast begeleid je freelancers en student-redacteuren bij het pitchen en schrijven. Belangrijk: je bouwt een netwerk op binnen de internationale gemeenschap in Groningen (student en medewerker); als er iets gebeurt, dan weet jij dat als eerste.
We zijn niet per se op zoek naar een international, al is dat wel een pre. Bovenal ben je een journalist die van wanten weet en affiniteit heeft met de academische wereld. Je hebt een journalistieke neus voor het (harde) nieuws en het mooie verhaal en je weet wat er gaande is binnen het hoger onderwijs.
Uiteraard is je Engels vlekkeloos, in woord en geschrift.
Wat bieden wij?
- afhankelijk van opleiding en werkervaring bij een fulltime functie en een salaris van maximaal € 4.093,- (schaal 9 Nederlandse universiteiten) bruto per maand. Deze functie is gedefinieerd volgens het UFO-functieprofiel ‘Redacteur 4’
- 8% vakantietoeslag en 8,3% eindejaarsuitkering over het jaarlijks bruto inkomen
- een aanstelling van 0,6 fte, voor de duur van een jaar
- werkdagen zijn maandag, dinsdag en woensdag
