UKook: Verheiratete

It's UKook, the cooking show starring international students and their favourite foods from home. This week, German student Marvin Kunz prepares verheiratete.

Verheiratete
Serves 4

300 - 400 g potatoes
200 g flour
2 eggs
Carbonated water
Milk
Nutmeg
Salt
200 g bacon strips or cubes
400 ml cooking cream
These steps are only an orientation, because everything can be cooked at the same time.

Marvin Kunz is a 22-year-old German student of psychology at the RUG. He moved to Groningen when he started his education, but he often travels home to the Saar region of Germany where his family lives. He learned this dish, which used to be eaten by the miners of the region and remains popular today, from his mother and grandmother. In German, the name of the dish – verheiratete – means ‘married’: wonder why? Stay tuned to the end of the video and you will find the answer there!

Verheiratete
Preparation time: 30 minutes
Considerations: contains milk and eggs

STEP 1
Peel the potatoes, chop them into small pieces and put them in a pan with hot water. Once the water boils, let the potatoes cook for about 20 minutes or until they are done.

STEP 2
Add small bacon strips to a pan to cook – depending on your preferences, the bacon can be either a bit raw or crispy. Once cooked, drain the fat from the pan and leave only the bacon. Add two small bottles of cooking cream (400 ml) and let it mix with the bacon. Stir to prevent burning and let it boil for a couple of minutes. After that, it should be done. If the cream is too sweet, you can always add salt to your own taste, but with the bacon, it should be already salty enough.

STEP 3
While the potatoes and the bacon are cooking, prepare the batter for the flour dumplings. First, place 200 g of flour in a bowl and then add two eggs. Next, add a bit of milk and carbonated water until you can stir the mixture easily. When the dough is ready, add nutmeg and salt to taste. Prepare a pot of boiling water, then spoon out a small amount of batter and drop it into the water. Repeat this until all the batter has been added to the water. Let the dumplings boil for a few minutes until they are completely done.

Serving:
After draining the water off the potatoes and dumplings, place them on a plate together. Pour the bacon sauce on top and the dish is done! Guten appetit!
