The University of Utrecht is taking a ‘courageous step’ by choosing not to participate in the prestigious Times Higher Education ranking, says rector magnificus Jaqueline Scherpen. However, Groningen has no plans to follow that example.
Many international students use such rankings in deciding which university to go to, she explained during a university council committee meeting. The rector is concerned that the UG may miss out on ‘great academics and students’ if it does not participate.
Nevertheless, she does understand the criticism aimed at the concept of rankings: the quality of a university cannot be reduced to a simple number.
This year, the UG ranked 79th on the international ranking, four places lower than last year.
