Oops: psychology students find out too late that course is full

The new block started this week, but nearly sixty psychology master students are still looking for a course to earn the required number of ECTS. They didn’t hear until last Wednesday that the course Competence and Motivation was full.

It’s not unusual for students to not be able to register for classes. However, it is unusual that they didn’t hear about this class being full until last week, since the registration period for courses has now passed. This means fifty-seven students are in trouble.

Falling behind

‘We’ll have to email staff members and wait to see if we’re even allowed in the other courses, while possibly falling behind with the reading and the coursework’, says Andrey (25), who’s doing a one-year master in clinical psychology.

He’s mainly upset that the department didn’t inform the students earlier. ‘I myself have been scolded by university staff for lacking in communication when it comes to having issues on my end and doing things close to the deadline. So obviously I am frustrated that the university deals with us in such a disrespecting manner.’

Communication error

Education director Sabine Otten acknowledges that mistakes were made at the department. ‘We didn’t communicate until it was too late’, she says. ‘That’s partially to blame on the student service desk, where things weren’t running smoothly. This was a processing error and it shouldn’t have happened.’

She understands students aren’t happy. ‘They should have been alerted much sooner. The pandemic prevents them from visiting lecturers in their office, which makes finding a solution harder. I can imagine that’s even more frustrating.’

Solution

Otten is hard at work to find a solution ‘We don’t want students to get delayed, so we’re trying to figure out what we can do concerning the registration, and looking at other options, like literature reviews.’

According to Otten, the department will provide tailored suggestions for the students and help them to find a solution. ‘As director, I will make an effort to fix this.’
