Appeal in Hans G. case

The Public Prosecution Office (OM) is appealing the rulings in the court case against former RUG manager Hans G.

Two weeks ago, the court in Almelo sentenced the former manager of the RUG’s technical services department to three years in prison, with a six month suspended sentence, for corruption of public servants. The OM, which had demanded four years, disagrees with this decision and has appealed the ruling.

Hans G. himself has not made an appeal. He had until 5 p.m. on Wednesday to do so. His lawyer, who had argued for his client to be acquitted, was not available to respond.

The court considered it proven that the former head of the technical department accepted money and resources from maintenance companies in exchange for work at the university. The sentence was lower because the court said it could not be proven that Hans G. swindled the RUG out of more than 1.1 million euros. Two weeks ago, the judge said the evidence did not conclusively point to that exact amount. So the court ultimately based its ruling on an amount of 612,453 euros.

Money laundering

Michiel G., the main suspect’s son, was sentenced to two years in prison, with a six month suspended sentence. But the OM had asked for a three-and-a-half year sentence, with a one year suspended sentence. Both the OM and the suspect will be appealing the ruling. The son was found guilty of receiving stolen goods and money laundering.

Jan J., the owner of one of the installation companies that Hans G. used to perpetrate the fraud, will also be appealing his conviction, as will the OM. J. was convicted of two years in prison with a six month suspended sentence. He paid Michiel G. and his ex-girlfriend a ‘salary’ for work they did not actually do. He charged the RUG for the money using forged invoices.

He was also convicted for possession of illegal arms. During their investigation, FIOD found parts of a gun and ammunition.

When the case will appear before the Arnhem-Leeuwarden court has not yet been determined.
