Groninger Museum for free

Since September, the Groninger Museum has been running an experiment in which students could visit the museum for free. This proved to be such a success that the museum wants to extend the policy permanently.

Art lovers at the RUG, Hanze University of Applied Sciences, the Alfa College and Noorderpoort have been very fortunate. Since September, they have been able to visit the museum for free and see the special Rodin exhibit or any of the other works the museum is currently housing.

Normally, approximately 1,500 students visit the museum around this time of year. Now, that number was between ten and eleven thousand. That is why the Groninger Museum wants to offer students free admission permanently.

Financing

On the whole, the experiment cost 90,000 euros. The Groninger Museum itself invested 20,000 euros and the rest was supplied by the Groningen Accords, a partnership between the various educational institutions, the municipality of Groningen and UMCG.

Whether the museum will receive new financial support is not yet known. ‘The board of the Accords will have to decide on the partnership with the Groninger Museum and the financial support to the museum’, says RUG spokesperson Gernant Deekens.
